THOMAS ÅBERG, composer
Swedish Music for the Organ

By the Sea at Night
by
JOHN GRACEN BROWN
From his poetry book The Search.
Published with permit from Mr. Brown.

Night comes

and all shades

are heavy

across the land

but I do not sleep...

as my mind wanders,

and wanders,

and moves and mingles

with the night.

But I do not sleep...

as my mind wanders,

and wanders,

and moves and mingles

with the night.

Night distance

Night distance

and the sleepless night

are one...

Night distance

and the sleepless night

are one...

Night distance

and the sleepless night

are one, are one, are one.

Down below

the shadows

meet

where the sea

meets the shore.

And there

the liquid darkness

rises and runs

upon the shore.

And beyond,

the large,

dark clouds

give hint

of the moon

beyond.

The moon

appears

behind

the heavenly

clouds

and pierces

deep into my heart.

The moon

appears

behind

the heavenly

clouds

and pierces

deep into my heart.

The soul

dances

by the sea...

and I stand

intently

gazing,

deep

in the night.

The distant

sail

of the night

is black.

The distant

sail

of the night

is black

against

a paler

moonlit

sky.

The deep night

moves

over the land

in peace.

The passages

into

the heart

reach

out...

The passages

into

the heart

reach

out

into

the night.

Distant

refrains

come to me

and settle

somewhere

deep within.
